Activity 1

Jonker Trail Amazing Race
Zheng He’ Legends (Museum)
Founded in 1400CE by a Hindu prince from the house of Srivijaya, Malacca has prospered under the patronage of the Ming emperor whose envoy, Admiral Zheng He first visited in 1409.  Since then many foreigners have appeared to trade with few who desired to conquer it in 1511 (Portuguese) and then in 1641 (Dutch) and finally in 1795 (British). A brief occupation by Japanese during WW2 created a turn of event with Malacca being part of the Federation of Malaysia in 1957.

On this learning journey, pupils traced the heritage and history of old Malacca (circa 1400 – 1957) through close teamwork using leads and assigned tasks to search for clues in solving a murder case of a prominent Malaccan.
Complementing the Amazing Race pupils must complete a self guided programme through a maze covering the legendary adventures of Admiral Zheng He at an ancient ‘warehouse’ along the Malacca River

St Paul’s Hill Historic Trail
Zheng He’s Voyage (Princess’ Well)
Built by the Portuguese as a chapel and later turned into a fortress by the Dutch, St Paul’s Hill became a famous site where St Francis Xavier preached and spread Christianity from Malacca to all over Asia.  Finally it was turned into a burial ground with high tombstones that still can be seen today.

Not far from here is another hill known as Bukit Cina where the legendary Admiral Zheng He resided and later became the home of a Chinese princess. Here a well can be found which is known for those who drink the water will revisit Malacca.  The local Chinese guilds later turned this hill into a burial ground.

On this learning journey, pupils will explore St Paul’s Hill to solve the location of General Yamashita’s hidden treasure, a Japanese war commander who looted from Chinese towkays during WW2.  Using leads and assigned tasks, team must seek for hidden clues by solving problems and combing suspected sites for answers to find the location of the hidden treasures. Could it be in the sacred well of the princess?

Malay Culture & Lifestyle – Sg Rambai with Malay Traditional Wedding Feast
When Parameswara first arrived in Malacca, it was called Kampung Bertam and he renamed it ‘Melaka’.  The local inhabitants were mainly the sea gypsies (aka Orang Laut) and belonged to the proto-Malay tribes.  Mixed with the peoples of Indonesia, the Deutero-Malays formed the racial basis for the group which today we simply call the Malay. The ‘kampung’ or village is a self contained settlement where blood relationship is closely knitted and thus closely preserving cultural heritage, traditions and values, unlike in an urban dwelling.

Malay weddings are grand affairs where the couple is treated as royalty. Weddings are usually spread out over several days, starting with the Henna-staining ceremony, followed by the Nikah ceremony and ending with the Bersanding, which is the actual wedding day.  During the Bersanding which literally means the "sitting together of the bride and bridegroom on the bridal couch" known as the Pelami.  At the agreed time, the bridegroom is escorted in a procession with a hadrah or kompang band (male music group) to his bride's house.  On arrival, he has to pay a 'tax' in the form of money to the girl's family before he enters each door leading to the pelamin to take his place besides his bride. An astakona, a tiered pedestalled tray, is also placed in front of the pelamin.  Each tier contains a mound of cooked yellow rice studded all over with red-dyed eggs. This tray will later be presented to the emak pengantin (a close friend or relative chosen to be the matron of honour for the marriage) as an act of appreciation for her help during the ceremonies. The groom then sits with the bride on the pelamin.  This is followed by feasting and merry-making, called the kenduri

Pupils participate in activities as part of the kampung community spirit including a telematch, traditional wedding feast and celebration, greatly appreciating the Malay culture.  Selected students will participate as part of the wedding set.

Activity 4

“Little Nyonya” Peranakan Wedding Show
(This activity shall be alternate to the Malay Traditional Wedding Feast)

Peranakan Chinese and Baba-Nyonya are terms used for the descendants of late 15th and 16th-century Chinese immigrants to the Indonesian archipelago of Nusantara during the Colonial era.

Members of this community in Melaka address themselves as "Nyonya Baba" instead of "Baba-Nyonya". The wedding ceremony of the Peranakan is largely based on Chinese tradition, and is one of the most colourful wedding ceremonies in Malaysia and Singapore. At weddings, the Dondang Sayang, a form of extempore rhyming song in Malay sung and danced by guests at the wedding party, was a highlight. Someone would begin a romantic theme which was carried on by others, each taking the floor in turn, dancing in slow gyrations as they sang. It required quick wit and repartee and often gave rise to laughter and applause when a particularly clever phrase was sung. The melodic accents of the Baba-Nonya and their particular turns of phrase lend to the charm of this performance.

Pupils will have first hand witnessing how a Peranakan wedding is conducted in the environs of a refurbished ancient Ming warehouse by the Malacca River. Selected pupils will participate as part of the wedding set.
